Music Contests

Music Contests

With the popularity of American Idol, more and more people have been turning to music contests as a way to try to get discovered. Although the show centers around a music competition featuring singing as the primary activity, most music contests actually focus around songwriting and lyrics. They also don't have as much of a performance aspect as American Idol. Sending in a demo tape, performing with a simple four piece band, or even just writing down some lyrics and sending them in is often enough for most of these competitions.

Perhaps the easiest ones to get involved in are music lyrics contest. Writing an award-winning song takes a lot of talent, but anyone with a way with words can write good lyrics. Musical lyrics contests can be a way to get the attention of record producers and executives as well as a chance to get some valuable experience. Don't get me wrong – a typical music contest will not lead to fame and fortune. What it can lead to, however, is a demo, a cash prize, or a chance to meet music executives. All of these are valuable steps on the way to becoming a full-fledged musician.

Music composition contests are a little bit more stressful, but they are also more potentially rewarding than plain old musical lyrics contests. In a music composition contests, you either have to send in a demo or give a live recording of your song. Obviously, if you don't have a lot of experience as a performer, the demo is a little bit easier. Even if you haven't performed a lot, however, you should still consider live music contests. After all, the only way to get better at performing live is to practice. In a live music competition, you get ample opportunities to strut your stuff before a tough audience. This is what makes beginners into seasoned musicians.

Of course, before you get involved in nationwide music contests you should see what is going on around your area. Many schools have battles of the bands, and this tradition continues on through the college circuit and the club scene. Becoming a well-known local bands may not seem like the fame and fortune that you dream about, but it is the first step on a musical career. Just getting involved in the local scene can be enough to help you make a name for yourself. Good luck, and keep practicing.
